    # ls -ld /etc /etc/hosts
    drwxr-xr-x 28 bin bin 6144 Oct 23 17:46 /etc
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root system 12528 Aug 28 11:33 /etc/hosts

    as you have rw-r--- a normal user cant read it

    on /etc/hosts it is -rw-r-----
    on /etc/ it is drwxr-xr-x
