All I can remember about this issue is that the port speed settings are
different for SMS and OS usually. SMS is 9200 while the OS is something
that you can configure and needs to be queried

I am not so sure if it is the handshake settings as this does work for all
my other servers connected via this console switch. Please send me the pin
diagram anyway. Thanks.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I had this problem a few years ago.
The SMS needs one set of handshake lines asserted, and the booted OS
needs another.
I think one needs CTS and the other needs DTR. I don't remember the pin
numbers at the moment, but I can see if I still have a diagram if you
need it.

though that I never see the SMS menu, and the console session comes back
when AI! X starts up with the daemons, tcp/ip, nfs, etc and I get my login
prompt back again.

type output to a locally attached graphical console. I say this because I
even phoned the data centre, and had an operator disconnect my S1 serial
cable and hook up a dumb terminal. I again shutdown the server and got him
to tell me what he saw. I was hoping that he would tell me the dumb
terminal is saying "press 0 to assign this as the system console" type of
deal, but he gets the same thing as I do when I log in via the console
switch.

anyone know how I can get AIX and this server to recognize tty0 for SMS
console output.
