You can change inted as follows, to spawn ftpd in debugging mode:
# man ftpd
[snip]
-d Sends debugging information about ftpd daemon operations to the syslogd
daemon. If you specify the -d flag, you must edit the /etc/syslog.conf file
and
add the following entry:
daemon.debug FileName
Aside from that, change syslog.conf to capture *.debug to a separate file.

Bill,
Thank you very much for the response. The job in question has been
running from years, in the last 8 months it is second time I am facing this
problem. And the user stressess more on this lost connection message and
asks me to give a reason for this. When i have checked it up with the
network team, they have confirmed that there was no downtime in the network
during this time. Is there anyway I can answer the user.. i have been
trying
to know the cause of this message, but efforts in vain...
TIA

The reasons for a lost FTP connection are almost as many as the different
types of clouds in the sky. It could be a network burp, a core dump, a
random bug, etc.
Here is an ftp script I use for file transfers. It actually captures the
whole ftp session, so I can see the details of the transfer. With a bit of
work, it could be converted to ssh/sftp.

Hi folks,
I have peculiar problem during File transfer using FTP. I have a
job on server A, that fetches a particular file from 5 different servers
(say server 1 to server 5) and merges all these files. This job usually
takes around 30-45 minutes time, but yesterday this has taken an unusually
long time of 2.5 hours. When I have looked in to my log files I found that
the ftp connection to the server 1 was not through and hence the file
transfer from this server did not happen. I have looked in to the
/var/adm/messages file on the server 1 and found that there was message
showing lost connection from server A. I could not really understand what
could be the reason behind this.
Any one has any idea about the reason for this problem.
Also please find the entries in the /var/adm/messages on the server 1
Jun 15 03:22:17 server1 ftpd[49268]: connect from 213.62.36.193
Jun 15 03:33:05 server1 ftpd[49268]: lost connection to 213.62.36.193
[213.62.36.193]
TIA
