I've written my own backup utility (since my company's too friggen cheap to spend for the backup software). I basically use the native aix dd (which has an option span=yes to span tapes). It's written in perl and uses the expect.pm to watch for the insert next tape prompt and changes tapes behind the scenes. email me offline if you'd like the code. It also uses a mysql database to record what's on what tape and such. It's geared toward our own needs here, but you might be able to modify it without much trouble...The code's heavily commented (due to my early onset alzheimers).

    Hi All,

I wounder if any of you can help me out here....

We have a 3584 tape library which is fibre connected up to a H80, we don't have any software for it yet (Tivoli). What I would like to know is is there a way of backing up the system through the tape library and when the first cartridge gets full the library knows to put the next available cartridge in. I have been looking at the command tapeutil but I am unsure if this will change the cartridge when it is full.

I hope you understand what I mean.

    Thanks
