    I'm assuming you're running the fsck on a system that's up and running.

    With that assumption, I'd boot to single-user mode (I think you may have to boot off of install CD's so that nothing gets run from /var on disk, and make /var not possible to unmount), get a maintenance shell, make sure /var is not mounted, and rerun the fsck.

    If this output is from a quiescent, unmounted /var... umm... when was your last backup of /var? ;)

    There may be other ways around it, but that's as much as I know about... anyone have better ideas?

    Subject: any ideas to fix filesystem /var ?

    I get this:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------
    $ fsck -p /dev/hd9var

    /dev/hd9var (/var): Bad Inode Map (NOT SALVAGED)
    /dev/hd9var (/var): Bad Block Map (NOT SALVAGED)
    /dev/hd9var (/var): Filesystem integrity is not guaranteed
    /dev/hd9var (/var): 458 files 20485 blocks 241659 free
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -------------
    any ideas in resolving it? TIA
