I don't believe that can be done, but it could be done with NFS.

    To All,

I have a system file that that has both read and write access to the
system. I need for an external application to access this file in a read
only manner. This external program also looks at some other files in other
directories but it needs read/write access to those.

To make a long story short -- I felt like the best way to handle this was
create a complete separate directory and put symbolic links in there
pointing to the files it needs to use.

Here's my problem. I need for the "real" file to maintain its permissions
-- but I want the symbolic link to only have read access to the file.
Does anyone know of a way of setting the permissions on the symbolic link
to be for example "read only" but yet not effect the permissions of the
    "real" file?

    Many thanks,

    Mark Monroe
