    It sounds like you've already fixed this particular problem, but this
    seems like a good time to point out the usefulness of running the usrck
    command periodically to hunt for this sort of thing. We recently had a
    nasty problem caused by a corrupt entry in /etc/security/passwd. This
    error caused the password indexing routines to intermittently create a
    password file that wouldn't authenticate certain users. It was wierd,
    but usrck found the problem and we now run it regularly from cron.

    Also, I remember several APARs correcting corruption in
    /etc/security/lastlog. Both 4.3.3 and 5.1 were affected. 5.2 may be on
    the list as well. One of the side effects of this lastlog corruption was
    that it could break indexed passwords.

    usrck is a good preventitive maintenance tool and it's especially
    important if you use indexed passwords.
