As far as I understand it it does load balancing & failover.

Stephen can you confirm whether the MPIO with HDS only supports failover and
not load balancing? One of my other team members is adamant that MPIO for
HDS only supports failover, so is recommending that we use HDLM, which
supports both.

Actually you can use either!
We used MPIO on AIX 5.2 because when we implemented 5.2 the HDLM device
drivers did not support AIX 5.2.
MPIO works fine with the HDS SAN.
