In case anyone's interested, I did my updates yesterday without difficulty.

I settled on eight at a time in the end. I had about 40 servers to do but
split fairly evenly between two NIM masters so this seemed adequate. The
updates had all finished in a bit under one hour, including a checking
script, (added as a NIM script resource) but not including the time to
reboot the servers, (also in the script). The only problems I had were
    nothing to do with NIM.

I also posted about viewing logs for parallel updates a couple of weeks ago,
    (with no response, alas).

"nim -o showlog <machine>" proved to be what I needed. My earlier test of
this hadn't given me any output, but those were only after previews or
committing filesets, not an actual update_all.

One difficulty I had was trying to keep track of the status of all of the
updates: which machines were being updated, which were still waiting, which
were already rebooting. I'll have a hunt around for convenient ways of
doing this but if anybody's got any good ideas or hints I'd be glad to hear
    them.
