I've a p570 AIX 5.3 ML02 with same symptom, using SAP an Oracle too.
I had to reboot my server today and run synclvodm to solve this "problem".

Subject: Volume group must be varied on: Strange never seen this before
Hi All,
I have a LPAR on a P650 that is up and running. It's been up for 22 days.
SAP and Oracle are running on this lpar. There was a problem with paging
space last week, and I was going to add more paging space when I noticed
the following:
On all three of my volume groups, I tried to do "lsvg" What I get back is
"Volume group must be varied on; use varyonvg command."
Isvg returns fine, until I specify the volume group.
If I do a "lspv" on all the disks I get: the same command, and the stats of
the disks are all ????????????????????????....
Yet sap and oracle are very happy. The thing I can't do right now is add
more paging space because of this.
Have you seen this? And, can I run the varyonvg command while the system
is running?
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance
John
