We have a 7315 HMC which had to be restored due to a bad disk. Before the disk failure, the HMC could see both of our p650 in our racks. However, after the rebuild/restore, it would only see our production p650 and not our backup.

After calling IBM support about this problem and running through some items, they suggested that I power cycle the machine and see if that would alleviate the problem. However, when I scheduled the time to do the power cycle, I had to call IBM about bringing our backup p650 partitions back online. It was then I was told that our HMC was not in a supportable IBM configuration since we had connected our production p650 HMC connection to serial port 1 and our backup p650 HMC connection to serial port 2 of the HMC.

I was also told by IBM that in earlier version of the HMC that it was possible to do such a configuration. But, since we are running v3.2.3 of HMC that serial port 2 could only be used for a modem and the we should have 8-port Async adapter/Breakout box that would connected on serial port 1.

Does anyone out there know of a way to make the HMC serial port 2 act like serial port 1 and recognize our backup p650? I'd rather not have to go through the hassle of making a case for buying the 8-port Async Adapter and Breakout box.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks,
