The client software allows you to backup or archive data to the TSM
Server so it needs to be installed on every host that you want to
    backup.

The server software is installed on the host that is the target for the
backups and is connected to the tape drives. It is configured with
disk pools as targets for the backup data to make backups quicker. You
then migrate data to the tape pools so that data can be streamed to tape
more efficiently. You can install the client software on the server as
stated previously but that is so you can back up data from that host as
    a client as well.

There are many good redbooks and the TSM library is available online to
    download.

One other question, people here (non admins) think we can run without
the server software and use only the client. Can this really be done?
They quoted things they read (which they can't find now).

My question would be is what does server handle and what does client
    handle?

    TIA
    Vince
