When I tried to install Apache 1.3.31 from an RPM, it complained that it
    could not find

            error: failed dependencies:
                    libexpat.a (libexpat.so.0) is needed for apache-1.3.31-1

but was able to install the RPM's for the development and the manuals for
    1.3.31 for AIX 5.1

So, I went to http://bullfreeware.com and found a BFF of Apache 1.3.31
    for AIX 5.2

    On http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/index.html as well as
http://www.apache.org" was able to find version 1.3.33 and 2.0.54 in
tarballs, but they did not seem to install in the same locations.

So, I went with the .bff file because 1) It was a BFF and 2) it said for
AIX 5.2 while all these others only went up to 5.1

But, the installp failed because it said it could not change owner to
"freeware" and group to "frec" of most of the files it was installing. It
kept installing, failing and cleaning-up until I finally made dummy
entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group for "freeware" and group "frec".

So, what was that all about. Should I toss that and try some other way,
say the tarballs? Should I go looking for the libexpat.a so I can use
    the RPM install instead?

Our Webmaster is out this week. How can I test to see if the install of
the 1.3.31 via the .bff file worked?

    Subject: Apache for AIX 5.2

I have a P655 running AIX 5.2. Web guys wanted to move web server off
older box (AIX 4.3.3 ML11) running iPlanet to the P655. Corp-IT has
dropped iPlanet for Apache. We wanted to do the same. Tried to install
IBM's Apache implementation off the Bonus CD that came with AIX 5.3 base
CD's. Could not figure out how to install, since not really a LPP
package. Somehow, I think I got it to install, but web-master says it
does not run correctly. Gives errors about can't find dynamic libraries.

So, want to just start over!

Where should I get Apache for AIX 5.2?

How should I install it? (Found a site to download real Apache for AIX,
    but it was an RPM.)

Any other info you care to share.
