    chdev -l hdiskX -a pv=clear

    then rename to something like eeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    No problem. I have not either and that is why I am worried. I can just see
    myself at 2:00 am one morning and the DBA is saying they are running out of
    space - I go in and grab the first free disk and give it to a volume group
    and crash Oracle. How do you spell recovery. I do not like the situation.

    These disks were part of a volume group before so they may have pv
    information on them. When I do a lspv it says that the disk is not assigned
    to a volume group. The DBAs have not loaded the Oracle yet so I do not know
    what happens when Oracle start using it. May be there is no problem but my
    guess is the system will not know that oracle is using it and will think it
    is a free disk. Thanks anyway.

Yes, I totally mis-understood you.  I'm terribly sorry, and this is a
delemia, since you can't 'name' hdisks.
Do you see any garbage in the PVID section when you do a lspv for instance,
or do they say 'none'.  If they say 'none' that means that Oracle is not
messing with the first few bytes of the disk, and you may be able to use the
PVID area as 'marker'
If you have any spare disks, try making a PV out of one of them, then give
it to Oracle.  See if Oracle rejects it, or wipes out the old PVID back to
zeros.
This is kinda bad on Oracle's part, as I can see this as 'all kinds of
trouble' on any platform.  Jeeze, you would assume that they would block the
disk from normal OS access somehow.
Sorry for the confusion, I guess I am not used to products being that 
aggresive with disk management.
