    List,

I am upgrading a system (p650/no LPARS) from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3 and I am
    having issues after the install.

I started the install yesterday around 2pm and got to the rebooting
process when I was called away for another production issue with our
Tru64 machines. When I returned this morning, all I had was the X
Server background and the "aixconsole" window running. I couldn't SSH
to the machine or anything (connection refused). I had to reboot the
machine, which then gave me a "ROOT MNT FAILED" 557 error and then I
went into maintenance mode with the 5.3 disks, formed a new log device,
fsck'ed all the filesystems, rebuilt a boot image and typed 'exit' to
let it mount the filesystems. I am able to read all the files and
navigate the filesystem. When I reboot normally (shutdown -Fr), it goes
back to saying root mnt failed.

    I was thinking 2 things:

    * fscking hd4 and do a reboot from there without trying to mount it

    * fsck/mount hd4, copying everything off of it while preserving links,
permissions, modes, etc to a seperate LV, mkfs'ing hd4 again and copying
    everything back.

I got off the phone with IBM who basically said that I should restore
from tape, which isn't a bad idea, I have one from last night, but it's
    an interesting problem.

    Andrew
