First of all, good luck :-).
Here are the issues we ran into.
1. Oracle and SAP wanted a full 64 bit kernel. The F50 (H50s for us) are 32
bit. Eventually, we retired all our H50s rather than upgrade them to AIX 5.2
We had issues with 32 bit cards on a 64 bit kernel not being supported - older
SSA adapters for example.
2. On AIX 4.3.3, oracle ran 8.1.0.7. When we went to AIX 5.2, they switched to
9.2.0.6. Memory usage for small databases jumped dramatically under 9.2.0.6 due
to changes in the minimum requirements for SGA.
3. AIX 5.2 has an unfortunate history of maintenance levels. ML3 and ML5 were
particulary bad. We are using ML6 ++++.
Mksysb from before ML3 can not be used with a CD > ML3 and vica versa. ML4 was
mostly stable but had file system integrity issues that did not get resolved
until ML6++++.
4. For us, it turned out to be better to do a reinstall than to do a migration.
We wanted JFS2 filesystems for the rootvg stuff which you can't do as a
migration. Also gave us the opportunity to get the OS images in sync with our
standard.

Subject: Migrating to AIX 5.2
I'm going to be installing AIX 5.2 in the near future: migrating from AIX
5.1 and AIX 4.3.3.
Obviously I'll go through the IBM Installation guides and the release notes etc
but is there anything I should be aware of that isn't covered in them, or which
I might miss?
Servers are an F50 and some p660-6H1s, using SSA of various types. It's a PSSP
cluster - hence 5.2, not 5.3. CWS is already at PSSP 3.5 and the nodes will be
upgraded to that. Applications are primarily SAP and Oracle.
There's also a TSM server, (TSM will be updated), with a FC LTO Ultrium tape
library.
