can you login as a normal user if the default shell is not ksh?
has /etc/passwd been modified recently? I've seen instances where any user "below" an error in /etc/passwd would not let them login.
of course, the obvious question is, when did it last work properly and did anyone change anything since then

It is not either of those either... this is very puzzling...
a) the /home directory was mounted, only 36% utilized.. I could cd into /home, I could write files to /home, I could delete files from /home and I could execute ksh programs out of my home directory (as root, since I could not login as myself of course).
b) As for it being program related.. the application users on the system run a /home/*/.profile that does give them application specific attributes.. however, my .profile does not have anything application related in it... neither does the other two sys admins who are here.
Application specific was ruled out, since I was having the same problem and I have nothing related to any application in my .profile
Tks for all the input!

Re: Users can't login!!
That's not the case; /etc/nologin doesn't hang the session. The problem appears to be either a home directory not mounted or a program which runs upon users' login but doesn't work as expected.

We had a similar problem when the user directories couldn't be mounted
because automount got hung. We had to reboot.
