Re: Question on unmirroring rootvg before mksysb

Ah, OK. So short of a customized image.data file, the rootvg will be
restored as a mirror. However, you can customize the image.data file to
restore it without a mirror.

Nice. Thank you for making that clear.

Not so. During he restore you can use a customized image.data file to
remove the mirroring if you desire.

However, if the system was mirrored to start with then presumably the same
reasons which justified mirroring in the first place will still apply so
sooner or later it needs to be mirrored again. It *might* be quicker to
restore it un-mirrored, then re-build the mirror later, which is what I was
getting at.

Another consideration is that if one hasn't prepared a custom image.data in
advance, it might well be quicker to just restore complete with the mirror
than to create the necessary file at a time when presumably one is under
quite a lot of pressure. If there isn't enough disk space you may not have
a choice, of course.

Great point Simon. I was wondering when someone bring that up.

Just to add to this, If you run a standard mksysb (not sysback) with a
mirrored rootvg, you must make sure that when restoring, there are at least
enough disks allocated for the rootvg to account for the mirror during
restore. In other words your restore will/must be a mirrored rootvg, not an
unmirrored rootvg.

Is the recovery time still shorter if you include the time needed to
re-mirror the rootvg afterwards on the new systems?

Restore (if need be) is definitely faster.

I've heard and/or read many varying opinions on this.
Just wondering what the consensus is out in the real world....

Do you remove mirror copies before backing up rootvg w/mksysb?
