I know, but honestly I have run into this issue, twice in the same year.
The only thing I can think of is ntpd to jump the clock back by a small
amount of time - I know if doesn't make too much sense, since by default
ntpd will try to slow/accelarate the clock when the delta is small, but
then for a large delta the race condition would not happen. I guess I'll
never found out exactly what happened, but twice was enough for me to make
sure to remove all possible race conditions (no problem ever since, and
this was over 2 years ago).
