Re: Moving devices around on Virtual I/O LPARs.

I use "lsslot -c slot" and look for the parent of ide0 to get the pci
parent of the DVD device. It is not always pci1, but once you figure out
what it is for a given LPAR it is the same every time - at least until you
change hardware around which can renumber devices again. I'm sure you
could write a script using the lsslot command to ensure you get the right
pci device every time.

Subject
Moving devices around on Virtual I/O LPARs.

Virtual Gurus:

Weve just installed a p550 and have set up the Virtual I/O according to
Redbook instructions and advice from our IBM rep. Everything working as
expected and very cool implementation. However, a small detail is
bugging me. I know if I'm going to move the DVD-ROM using the HMC, I
must deactivate it locally from it's attached host first using:
rmdev -Rdl pci1
My question is, on a virtual LPAR, it it always pci1? When we've moved
the DVD-ROM around from LPAR to LPAR, it always seems to connect to pci1
but when it gets assigned to a Virtual I/O LPAR, it will get various pci
connections. We don't want to rmdev the wrong pci understandably, and
if you attempt to move without rmdev'ing the pci, it will tell you what
pci bus is attached, but that's a pain to always go thru. Is there a
way, either from the HMC or locally, to verify the pci bus the DVD-ROM
is using?

Thanks,
