Re: What command is smit running?

Two ways that I know: 1) when you get to the smit screen just before doing
it press F6. You can press F6 along the way but the command may not be
fully filled out yet. 2) clear the smit.log file and then do it once and
look in the smit log file. (1) does not require actually doing the command.
(2) you have to execute it at least once. (2) you can make a copy of the
log and turn it into a script. This is how I started AIX scripts a long
long (don't ask) time ago

Some years ago, I needed to automate multiple AIX installations, I had to
search the same kind of things (commands run by smit when hitting a Function
key).
I'm sorry I can't find the info again, but I know the first step for you is
to look the ODM base, where the smit screens are described.
The commands you are looking after are among the ODM informations.

Sorry I don't remember the details.

Folks,

Maybe for more in-depth F4 listings, there is more info, but I don't think
so.

As a test I ran smit install > Install and Update Software > Install
Software

I proceeded to use F4 to pick the cdrom from the list of "INPUT devices /
directory for software"
And I followed that up with another F4 to get a list of "SOFTWARE to
install".
At that point I picked a few filesets, returned to the "Install Software"
page and had it "PREVIEW only". After that I got out of smit and examined
both the /smit.log and the /smit.script files. As I expected, the data is
very rich and I have used it many times, but there is no info on how it
generated the two lists. It just jumps to show the command with the choices
I made from the F4.

So, just like the F6, there seems to be some limit.

In the early-1990's I actually created extra smit panels for my own
applications. (This was before there were good/any graphical programs or
GUI panels.) If you looked at my code, you could find what I called when
the F4 key was hit. It was usually a shell script or C program I had to
write. I don't suppose the source for this smit panel is available?

Well,that was my $0.02

smit.script and smit.log are the best files to see this information.
Thanks.

I think that if you run smit with the "-v" flag you should see the
information you want in the smit.log file. Use "-x" as well if you just
want the commands logged without actually creating a new VG.

F6 is not a valid option in the F4 selection window.

When in that screen, press F6.

When I do the following:
smit lvm
Volume Groups -> Add a Volume Group with Data Path Devices
and I press F4 over the "PHYSICAL VOLUME names" option to get a list
of
available vpaths

What command does smit run at that point to generate the list of
vpaths
that are available?

thanks,
