Re: Lpar, power5, how many nics?

No, that's not true at all. You only need one(1) physical/real (if you will) nic and that should be in the VIO LPAR.
You physically connect that nic from the VIOServer's PCI slot to a physical network switch and get connectivity
to the physical network - (i.e. "ping"). Then you setup virtual ethernet adapters on all of the regular AIX lpars in
that power5 managed system and link them to the physical nic on the VIOServer. Make sure your ethernet tagging/vlan
is setup correctly and you're ready to go.. Then just put a unique ip address for each lpar respectively on each
virtual ethernet adapter on each lpar. Those virtual ethetnet adpaters will use the physical nic in the vio server
as a switch/hub (if you will) or an ip forwarder. Now, the virtual nics in the regular lpars can communicate via
to the outside physical network/world via the VIOServer's physical nic's network connection. Ahhh, the power of
virtualization. IBM RULESS!!!!!!!

Of course with doing that, be careful of performance.

Thanks.

Subject: Lpar, power5, how many nics?

Lpar, aix5.3, power5 environment. I want to cut up, say 5 lpars out of a managed system.

Isn't it true, if I want to get out to other nodes, away from my managed system, I need to have a separate nics for each Lpar?

I know I can virt I/O between these nodes within the managed system and not need nics to do that.

thank you!
