Re: Lpar, power5, how many nics?

careful...VIO can be a useful tool, but remember that it requires resources(CPU/RAM). Coupled with the redundancy req'ts (2 VIO servers?) it may be a lot cheaper to just buy some more NICs.

For the high end p5 systems like p595 and stuff it's free. The Virtualization feature comes with it. As for the lower end models like the 520's and stuff. No, you must pay extra to IBM to get the Virtualization features activated.
Thanks.

As that part of, a feature of, an IBM AIX managed system?

thanks.

you can use virtual ethernet to get out to other hosts, but that may not be feasible.

there is a lot of flexibility

Subject: Lpar, power5, how many nics?

Lpar, aix5.3, power5 environment. I want to cut up, say 5 lpars out of a managed system.

Isn't it true, if I want to get out to other nodes, away from my managed system, I need to have a separate nics for each Lpar?

I know I can virt I/O between these nodes within the managed system and not need nics to do that.

thank you!
