I think for multiple LPARs NIM is the best way. A NIM master doesn't need a
lot of resources, apart from some disk space for the various NIM resources.
We use CSM, with standalone servers, (p520s) for the CSM management servers
but it's perfectly possible to put the NIM master on an LPAR if you prefer,
alongside whatever application you feel is most appropriate - e.g. TSM
Server - or in a dedicated partition of its own.
You could move your rmt or other device between partitions but NIM seems a
neater solution.

What about O/S disaster recovery? How would I create separate mksysb's for
each Lpar?
If I only have one rmt1, I guess I could script moving rmt1 between lpars?
Or, maybe use NIM?
I create daily mksysb's to a file too; I could send that to a tape, when
needed.
Thanks.

When I discussed it with some IBM folk when VIO came out, they suggested
that it was not really appropriate for very active systems. There is a
small overhead, so you get better performance having dedicated I/O in an
LPAR. VIO sounds good where you have a lot of small LPARs rather than for
fewer large LPARs.
