Justin is right: NIM is the way. You can make short work of setting NIM
up by doing this:
1) Stick your AIX 5.2+ CD in your system.
2) Go to the LPAR that has the CD and run the nim_master_setup script.
This script will do
all of the initial NIM creation for you; everything from a basic
lpp_source through defining
the master network. Don't worry about running NIM with a production
LPAR; the only thing
NIM does, when it's not actually updating/installing machines, is to
make bootp queries.
3) Do a smitty nim -----> manage resources -----> define a resource
-----> (select mksysb type)
-----> creat system backup image -----> hit the enter key.
Your new NIM-installable mksysb will be created in the directory of your
choice.
IBM's made NIM really easy with AIX 5.2+. Give it a try.

Nim is the way to go in an LPAR environment.
Thanks.

What about O/S disaster recovery? How would I create separate
mksysb's for each Lpar?
If I only have one rmt1, I guess I could script moving rmt1
between lpars?
Or, maybe use NIM?
I create daily mksysb's to a file too; I could send that to a
tape, when needed.
Thanks.

When I discussed it with some IBM folk when VIO came out, they
suggested that it was not really appropriate for very active systems.
There is a small overhead, so you get better performance having
dedicated I/O in an LPAR. VIO sounds good where you have a lot of small
LPARs rather than for fewer large LPARs.

careful...VIO can be a useful tool, but remember that it
requires resources(CPU/RAM). Coupled with the redundancy req'ts (2 VIO
servers?) it may be a lot cheaper to just buy some more NICs.

For the high end p5 systems like p595 and stuff it's
free. The Virtualization feature comes with it. As for the lower end
models like the 520's and stuff. No, you must pay extra to IBM to get
the Virtualization features activated.
Thanks.

As that part of, a feature of, an IBM AIX managed

thanks.

you can use virtual ethernet to get out to other hosts,
but that may not be feasible.
there is a lot of flexibility

Lpar, aix5.3, power5 environment. I want to cut up, say
5 lpars out of a managed system.
Isn't it true, if I want to get out to other nodes, away
from my managed system, I need to have a separate nics for each Lpar?
I know I can virt I/O between these nodes within the
managed system and not need nics to do that.
thank you!
