Re: APV Class (was Lpar, power5, how many nics?)

I went to one last summer. It was worth it if APV and VIO is fairly new
to you. It was only 2 days, so I would consider it an introductory
course. There wasn't much time for advanced concepts, performance tuning
and those other more advanced type of things you might be looking for if
you are already familiar with APV and VIO. It was a good class though.

The class connected to a remote lab, using VNC and some other tools. You
partner up with someone and 2 pairs of people (4 people total) on the same
HMC. Each pair creates a VIO server, AIX LPAR, and SuSe Linux LPAR so you
will have 6 LPARs on the box total. Was really good to use and learn the
VIO commands since those are so different. Everything was installed from
a NIM server in the lab. I would say it was about 70% lab work and 30%
lecture and presentation.

Disclaimer: Not sure how much the class has changed since then.

You can contact me offline if you want any more details.

Hi everyone - I'm back on the list after a hiatus.

Has anyone attended the Advanced Power Virtualization / Micro-partitioning
class ?

What about O/S disaster recovery? How would I create separate mksysb's
for each Lpar?

If I only have one rmt1, I guess I could script moving rmt1 between
lpars?

Or, maybe use NIM?

I create daily mksysb's to a file too; I could send that to a tape, when
needed.

Thanks.

When I discussed it with some IBM folk when VIO came out, they suggested
that it was not really appropriate for very active systems. There is a
small overhead, so you get better performance having dedicated I/O in an
LPAR. VIO sounds good where you have a lot of small LPARs rather than
for fewer large LPARs.

careful...VIO can be a useful tool, but remember that it
requires resources(CPU/RAM). Coupled with the redundancy req'ts (2 VIO
servers?) it may be a lot cheaper to just buy some more NICs.

For the high end p5 systems like p595 and stuff it's
free. The
Virtualization feature comes with it. As for the lower end models like
the 520's and stuff. No, you must pay extra to IBM to get the
Virtualization features activated.
Thanks.

As that part of, a feature of, an IBM AIX managed system?

thanks.

you can use virtual ethernet to get out to other hosts,
but that
may not be feasible.

there is a lot of flexibility

Lpar, aix5.3, power5 environment. I want to cut up, say 5
lpars
out of a managed system.

Isn't it true, if I want to get out to other nodes, away
from my
managed system, I need to have a separate nics for each Lpar?

I know I can virt I/O between these nodes within the
managed
system and not need nics to do that.

thank you!
