Just for the record, this media speed issue is somehow related to the
version of AIX used. I had a 5.2 system with multiple 10/100 NICs to similar
switches, all set to 100Mbps/Full Duplex fixed at both ends. After upgrading
AIX to 5.3 all NICs had to be set to Auto (with the switches still set to
100Mbps/FD) to function correctly. No hardware changes during the upgrade
whatsoever.

Right ... thanks everyone. Due to internal "history", most of our
switches are all set to Auto. I wound up migrating the IP address
and aliases from this adapter to a different one in the system (one
that was GigE on a GigE switch), rmtcpip'd and mktcpip'd, and
rebooted the system, and now I'm in full-duplex gigabit happiness. :-)

For 10/100 Ethernet switches it's generally recommended to force the
connection to what you want at both ends.
GbEth has to be set to Auto. On our newer 10/100/1000 switches the
connection also has to be set to Auto at both ends, even if the NIC
is a
10/100.
There's an IBM document describing in detail how to change it but I
seem to
have a Proxy problem at the moment, so I can't show you the link. :-
( It's
in the "Tips for AIX Administrators", or whatever that's called
nowadays.

Subject: Bad auto-negotiate on network adapter ...
For some reason, my 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter has "auto-
negotiated" to 100 HALF, which is causing lots of problems.
<SNIP>
Can I force the card to re-negotiate by doing an ...
ifconfig en0 down ; ifconfig en0 up
... or is there something else I can do to get it to re-negotiate
(short of rebooting)?
Thanks,
