I've got a possible resolution to this. I'm not certain yet, but it looks
promising.
I tried creating my NIM SPOT spot_aix433 directly, (smitty nim) rather than
leaving it up to setup_server. This failed with similar messages to before,
but it did not delete the spot afterwards so I was able to look at what it
had done.
lsnim -l spot_aix433 showed that the oslevel_r attribute existed in the new
spot, which was what I was trying to achieve originally.
Looking into {SPOT}/usr I found that /usr/lib/devices/nfs_kdes.ext did not
exist.
Various items on the Internet - including IBM docs - had suggested creating
this as a symbolic link to nfs_kdes_null.ext - something to do with NFS
problems with 64-bit kernel. I did this and ran a NIM verify of the spot,
which finished cleanly and set the resource to "ready for use".
I have some more work to do before I can actually install the nodes, but
it's looking better.

Not really...
I've got a deadline, so I've been experimenting in a desperate attempt to
get this working in the limited time available.
I tried simply creating the 'missing' directory. Having done that,
setup_server progressed a bit further, only to fail with a different
problem.
Now, it complains that spot_aix433 does not have an 'oslevel_r' attribute.
Indeed it doesn't! spot_aix520 does - I created this myself in preparation
for migrating nodes to 5.2, but nothing is actually using it yet.
spot_aix433 has version, release and mod attributes, (or something like
that). I've checked on another system and a 5.1 spot is the same as 5.2,
albeit the CWS in that case is running 5.1.
I next tried deleting spot_aix433 and running setup_server again, so that it
would re-create it - hopefully in the way it wanted it! Alas, that failed.
The key error message would appear to be...
0301-154 bosboot: missing proto file: /usr/lib/drivers/nfs_kdes.ext
So far, I don't have an idea of how to progress beyond this one or even what
to attempt next.

strange...
could you run
ksh -x setup_server
and post the output?

I'm doing a Disaster Recovery test at the moment.
Last time I ran this, my CWS was at AIX 5.1. Now, it's AIX 5.2 ML07.
I've restored my CWS from a mksysb and completed all the
re-configuration.
When I run setup_server, though, it fails. It's complaining that
there's no AIX 5.1 lppsource directory:
mknimmast: 0016-246 The directory
"/spdata/sys1/install/aix510/lppsource"
does not exist on the control workstation.
Well, it's quite right: that directory does not exist and I have no idea
why it should! All of the nodes are still at AIX 4.3.3. I've checked
the node data using splstdata and that correctly shows them as AIX
4.3.3. I've also been through the existing NIM resources and can't find
any which refer to this directory.
Can anybody suggest where the problem lies and/or how to get around it?
The basic recovery procedure I've used so far is:
Restore from mksysb.
Sundry minor bits of re-configuration.
Delete all existing frames
install_cw
Add back the frames for the DR site
Add appropriate node data
Remove pre-existing NIM information
setup_server
I've been doing this for years and although I've had loads of problems
in that time, this is a new one.
