Re: ping

This is not necessarily bizarre. Two things may cause this. The most likely reason is that ^C isn't set up as the kill key; as far as I remember you can see whether it is with the command 'stty -a'. This can be fixed with 'stty kill ^C' - stty should accept the notation '^C' for control-C.

Another possibility is that ping is hanging on the socket; I'm not entirely sure what it is when this happens, but network programs can be impossible to kill (even with kill -9) if they are waiting for something from a socket. In my experience you see this most often when trying to read from a bad NFS mount.

Do you really mean that you simply do a ping to some address, then Ctrl-C
doesn't work to end it?

If so, that's pretty bizarre!

I've got some recently installed 5200-07 servers and certainly haven't
experienced anything like this. Have you applied IBM's recommended
additional maintenance?

There doesn't appear to be anything network-related for ML7, though.

Did you upgrade this system from ML06, or from some earlier version of AIX?
Did you do an lppchk after the upgrade? (lppchk -v -m3).
