getwd problem

I have been working on tightening down my ftp security which seems to be OK. I can ftp to valid accounts with no problem and that user can go nowhere outside of that account. However, in the process, I have changed lots of permissions and now when I use something like WS_FTP, I get "directory identifier unavailable" and I receive the error "550 The getwd subroutine failed". If anyone knows what I need to reset to get this subroutine to execute again, I would greatly appreciate it.
