I've got everything off the bad disk now so I'm reasonably happy that the
system will continue OK, (unless there's a second failure, of course). I'm
still a bit nervous of hd5 but that shouldn't matter unless the server is
rebooted, which won't happen until I'm ready to replace the disk. (It's a
p660-6H1, and the internal disks aren't hot-swappable.) If everything falls
apart then I'd be quite tempted to restore from a mksysb. Might take a bit
longer but it's familiar territory and as you suggest, it's fairly easy to
take care of problems with missing/damaged LVs at that time.

I've had disaster recover exercises fail in the past when restoring mirrored
vgs. I've found that the following works:
mklv -y hd5 -t boot ....
Then allow the restore to continue.
I'm sure the same can be said for your situation. Do this and the other
small
details needed (bosboot, bootlist, etc) and you should be ready to go.

hd5 doesn't care where it is. I think it might have needed to be on PP1mklv,
once, but not anymore. If it's more than one partition, they must be
contiguous.
The mkboot command is no longer supported. I've used a combination of
bosboot and savebase which I hope will be OK. (It's what someone elseLee
advised me to do.)

the problem is that the existing hd5 is damaged, so a new one must be

One of my servers (AIX 5.2 ML07) had a disk problem. I've got a couple
of block-relocation and related errors.
Unfortunately, rootvg wasn't mirrored as in the past there wasn't enough
disk space. However, there have been some changes and with a bit of
shuffling around I was able to free up a suitable disk and ran a
mirrorvg.
Alas! It failed! All the LVs were created but hd5 and hd6 could not be
synchronised - presumably because they're on damaged portions of the
disk.
I think I can deal with hd6 by doing a swapoff then deleting it and
re-creating it. But how do I deal with hd5?
Can I delete the LV then re-create it? If so, how? I'm sure I've done
this in the past - re-create a missing boot LV, anyway - but can't
remember how at the moment. I'm hoping you might be able to save me
some time!
