/etc/route -f causes AIX 4.3 IP stack to hang

I needed to flush the ip route table on an AIX 4.3 system because of a
network switch change. When I issued /etc/route -f the whole IP stack
did hang, and I had to boot the system to get it back up. Very annoying.
AIX 5.3 works just fine. Anyone else seen this error, an maybe have a fix
or work-around?
