linux equivalent of pc hyperterm

I can use a windows laptop hyperterm to connect to a system port on a
AIX system. Is there a linux equivalent to hyperterm? I want to
replace "real" 3151 terminals with something that I can access over the
network, but still get to the system before it has a booted os.
