We are looking to possibly purchase a newer p5 server to supplement our older Power3 and p4 server farm.
It would be a good opportunity to consilidate some stuff onto partitions but I don't have any experience with LPAR's, DLPAR's or using an HMC.
What I recall hearing about is that with the newer Power5 servers I don't need to also buy an HMC anymore as I can do it via Hypervisor. Is that a correct statement? I can create LPAR's (or DLPAR's?) but if I want to do micropartitioning etc. I need to purchase the optional APV and Virtual I/O server options?
There is the IVM, a web based interface for some simple virtualization functions, but I highly recommend using a HMC.
Also, what's the difference between Power5 and Power5+?
Sorry for the rookie questions but earlier Managment had decided we were moving to Linux on Intel.
I know a fair amount about the POWER5 and virtualization on the pSeries, so feel free to ask.

It's not what I know that counts. It's what I can remember in time to use.
