Re: Need to replace hdisk0 in a 2-way mirrored rootvg

I would probably break the mirror, then remove the dodgy hdisk0 from the
system. Add the new one as hdisk0, and rebuild the mirror. You shouldn't
need to reboot: the only reason you normally do this is to pick up the
changed quorum setting for the volume group, but you've already done that
when you first mirrored rootvg.

Doing it this way does leave you slightly exposed if hdisk1 fails whilst
you're re-mirroring it.

Doing it the other way and making a third copy on hdiskX would be OK but
you'd have to adjust your bootlist, and it could lead to confusion in the
future as people tend to expect rootvg to be on hdisk0. I've never actually
tried using mirrorvg to create a third copy of a VG that's already mirrored,
but I guess it'd work.

If you do take out hdisk0 first, I'd suggest you don't put the replacement
in the same disk bay in case that's part of the problem.

Subject: Need to replace hdisk0 in a 2-way mirrored rootvg
Importance: High

Folks,

I have a 570 with three LPARs. One of the LPARS died a couple days ago.
Was able to get it back after HACMP took over and I reseated the hdisk0 and
hdisk1 drives. Why? SMS could not find a bootable device at either
locations. IBM suggested that maybe hdisk0 was at fault and was hanging the
SCSI bus for both. (I know, why do I have both mirrored drives on the same
SCSI bus?... Had too. Long story)

Anyway, we had to fail the system/resources back to this system and all
seems well. But, today, our IBM CE wants to bring in one new drive and
replace hdisk0.

Should I make a 3-way mirror then break our hdisk0 and remove it?

Or, should I break the present 2-way mirror, ride on hdisk1. Remove and
replace hdisk0 and remirror?

What ever I do, I can NOT bring down this server. I can NOT reboot! All
this must be down LIVE.

Any advice, horror stories, prayers would be appreciated.

BTW: CE says he has to take the old drive back with him before he leaves
and he is coming in about 1 Hour (12:30 PM EST).... So, a fast answer would
be best.
