Re: Clone root disk

When booting from a disk was imported from another system do you have to
boot it from SMS and then set the bootlist from AIX? I haven't done
this since microchannel days and the PVIDs were stored in some kind of
NVRAM.
Now, I just use mksysb or sysback to clone a system. Just make sure all
the device file sets are installed for the target system prior to making
the backup.

How about using alt_disk method to clone the disk ? This is what the
command was made for.

If you have a second disk in the system

smitty install
alternate disk installation
Clone the rootvg to an Alternate Disk

Set the smit panel to NOT boot from the cloned disk

after it is finished - exportvg the altinst_rootvg and rmdev the hdisk
device. Then you remove the disk and bring it to the other system. I've
just done this today and it works like a charm.

Message Unless you've got a pressing reason not to, I think it
would be better to just take a mksysb and install the second machine
from that. -- Simon Green -----Original Message-----

I have a single disk rootvg on one machine that I would like to
clone to a second, unused disk so I can use it on a different, but
identical machine. Does anyone know the best method to do this.
