I am planning to setup a NIM environment to service our AIX machines (30+).
I would like to use it for installs, fixes, upgrades, mksysb backups, etc. I have
some idea about how to proceed, having checked the archives and various
IBM documents, but still have a few questions.
First, for my NIM Master machine I would like to use a p615 or p520 with 2
cpus, 2GB memory, 72GB (mirrored) disk space for rootvg and about 300GB
(mirrored) disk space for a volume group to hold everything else (lppsource,
mksysbs, etc.). Do you think that this will provide a sufficient amount of
resources for a NIM master?
That's probably more machine than you need. I've found that .1 processor (uncapped) and 256M of memory is enough if you aren't doing much in parallel.
Second, I have been thinking about taking the 2day NIM course. However, I
have a lot of experience on pSeries machines, lpars, hmcs, etc. and would
rather spend education money on something else. Is NIM complicated enough
that I should take the course?
The lack of a _current_ Redbook is one of my major complaints. A lot of features have been added into NIM since AIX 4.3.
I've set up a couple of NIM servers in the last year, so feel free to ask any questions.

It's not what I know that counts. It's what I can remember in time to use.
