Unlike Grant I have not spent any time getting familiar with NIM.
I've always known it existed but never had the time or candidate server to act as the NIM Master.
In my situation I run mksysb's to tape and dvd-ram once a week to capture rootvg.
So without asking too many basic questions here:
- my NIM Master will change that process by sending the data to my NIM Master instead of physical media
- instead of booting from my mksysb media can I reload the OS off a NIM image instead?
- and it will also allow me to manage aix fixes?
I only have about 10 servers so I've never known if it was worth my time to setup.

Supposedly IBM is going to host a RED Book Symposium on NIM this year to produce a NEW AIX 5L NIM Red Book. The person who I spoke to early in 2006, had it on his radar, but the effort kept getting pushed back. Apparently IBM does not place the importance on NIM that some of us do.

I am planning to setup a NIM environment to service our AIX machines (30+).
I would like to use it for installs, fixes, upgrades, mksysb backups,
etc. I have some idea about how to proceed, having checked the
archives and various IBM documents, but still have a few questions.
First, for my NIM Master machine I would like to use a p615 or p520
with 2 cpus, 2GB memory, 72GB (mirrored) disk space for rootvg and
about 300GB
(mirrored) disk space for a volume group to hold everything else
(lppsource, mksysbs, etc.). Do you think that this will provide a
sufficient amount of resources for a NIM master?
That's probably more machine than you need. I've found that .1 processor
(uncapped) and 256M of memory is enough if you aren't doing much in parallel.
Second, I have been thinking about taking the 2day NIM course.
However, I have a lot of experience on pSeries machines, lpars, hmcs,
etc. and would rather spend education money on something else. Is NIM
complicated enough that I should take the course?
The lack of a _current_ Redbook is one of my major complaints. A lot of features have been added into NIM since AIX 4.3.
I've set up a couple of NIM servers in the last year, so feel free to ask any questions.

It's not what I know that counts.
It's what I can remember in time to use.
