Unlike Grant I have not spent any time getting
familiar with NIM.
I've always known it existed but never had the time
or candidate server to act as the NIM Master.
In my situation I run mksysb's to tape and dvd-ram
once a week to capture rootvg.
So without asking too many basic questions here:
- my NIM Master will change that process by sending
the data to my NIM Master instead of physical media
Yes and No, we keep on disk the mksysb images of the
production servers, however they are also stored in
the TSM server (tape). We do not rely on disk as our
sole backup method.
- instead of booting from my mksysb media can I
reload the OS off a NIM image instead?
correct, with NIM you can even boot a server into
maintenance mode without a mksysb or sysback image.
- and it will also allow me to manage aix fixes?
Yes, when we apply fixes from the NIM server, we do to
an alternate disk drive in case we need to fall back
to the original state.
I only have about 10 servers so I've never known if
it was worth my time to setup.
We have NIM since we had about 10 servers, the issue
here is physical access to them, I've never been
closer to 200 miles to them without people on the
datacenter, so for me it is a must, specially now that
I am located over 2000 miles away, but that has to be
combined with remote console access, we solve that
problem with a terminal server attached to the
network, SP nodes and now LPAR/VIO technology.
but if you look at it from personal life perspective,
if you have a problem with them in the middle of the
night and there is no one in the Datacenter to press
the reset button or load the OS CDs, NIM is a life
saver (along with remote console access).
best regards,
Enrique.
