How to halt a ssa_format

I was using ssa_format to format a new SSA disk drive. (Same problem
happens with the SSA Format Media Service Aid within the diag command -
it just calls ssa_format and ssa_progress under the covers.)
If the disk has problems and the format bombs out, it does not really
stop the formatting. The disk status remains "Format", the progress
indicator from ssa_progress keeps advancing, and it keeps generating
errors in errpt which get emailed to me by diagela. The format operation
is still going on.
How do I stop this thing? I know the disk is bad; I just want to replace
it with a new one and get on with life. I tried finding a process that
was doing it, but I couldn't find it. The manual says it uses "the ISAL
Format command", but no such thing is running.
