Greetings,

I want to try upgrading a server from 5.2 to 5.3 but I want the ability to
revert back to 5.2 if I have to so I plan on trying an alt_disk_install.
rootvg is not mirrored in this case and I have an extra disk available
(hdisk4) so I ran:
alt_disk_install -C hdisk4
Now I have an altinst_rootvg disk and the bootlist is set to this disk for
normal mode.
To finish this installation do I need to reboot to get Aix loaded from the
alinst_rootvg and then run the 5.3 migration on that hdisk?

Yes, if you look at the bootlist (bootlist -m normal -o) you should
see it pointing to hdisk4.

And if so, when I am done and satisfied with the upgrade how do I get rid of
altinst_rootvg and get to just good ol rootvg?

alt_disk_install -X old_rootvg

You'll see old_rootvg after you have rebooted on hdisk4 and migrated to 5.3.
