Re: help using IVM

the IVM removes a lot of functionality that you would expect in an LPARable machine.

not recommended.

the process to turn an IVM controlled machine into an HMC controlled machine does work though.

I am pretty sure that when I was in San Antonio at the Tech University this
year, they mentioned that IVM was going away. If that is the case, I would not
spend a lot of time on it.

Greetings,

My admin experience is limited to non-lpar RS6000/pSeries servers and have
never touched an HMC.
We did buy a used 520 last year and when we went to license it with Aix it
turned out it had been previously configured with APV software so we had to
license it that way. I did play around with it a little bit and setup the
HMC1 port with a static ip address so that I could fire up a browser and
connect to it. That seemed to work but I never had the opportunity to play
with any sort of APV features.

Now out of curiosity I decided to try and connect to it again but I can't
establish a connection.
I can ping it but I can't telnet or ssh to it (if I should be able to).

So two questions:
1. How do I fix it or troubleshoot it? I think I used the ascii console and
did a factory configuration reset when I first set it up.

2. Are other people using IVM in small shops? I just wonder about use
compared to HMC's as I realize they provide more functionality if you manage
multiple servers. I might only have 2 servers to manage if any.

Mark
