Re: Putting PSSP into our rearview mirror

I've un-sp'd boxes before -- it is not hard at all. All I did was remove PSSP
from the system and unplug the switch cable. It was an S80. I've also written
documentation on adding existing servers to SP complex's.

With the imminent death (well, end of support) of PSSP, we're looking to
move off of our SP complex. We have a bunch of Winterhawk IIs, which only
run on PSSP, so they're goners. We also have some SP-attached boxes which
we will have to save: some Ravens (S70, S7A and S80 boxes) and a Regatta
(7040) with a couple of LPARs. These boxes will probably have to be
removed from the SP complex. IBM provides no way to "un-SP" a system, so
we'll have to reinstall AIX and application software completely.

These machines are now running AIX 5.2. We would very much like to get
them to AIX 5.3. Normally I like to do things in incremental steps, so
I'd rebuild the machines as AIX 5.2, let them run for a month and then
upgrade them to AIX 5.3 in a separate outage. I'm thinking, though, that
since the big difference between AIX 5.2 and AIX 5.3 was micropartitioning
(which clearly isn't an issue on this old hardware), that there's minimal
risk in going directly to AIX 5.3. My inclination is to rebuild them as
AIX 5.3 from the outset.

What do you think? Has anyone else done this?

Thanks,
anker
