Re: Network Multipathing Question

One more note on EC, there are two kinds:

Simple configs:

Cisco Etherchannel
requires two switches and no switch configuration is necessary.
1 primary port (active)
1 backup port (inactive)

IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation
requires that the ports are on the same switch and there is a network
configuration on each port to trunk them on the switch.
2+ primary ports (active)

More complex configs, I've read about but never implemented, use an
aggregate with a backup aggregate configuration (ie both kinds). One
common gotcha is to remember to remove any IP attributes from the
physical devices that make up an etherchannel. AIX tend to plumb
physical ent's first, so, if you have an artifact config in the ODM your
eitherchannel start will fail because one of it's legs is in use.

Subject: Network Multipathing Question

Hello AIXers,

I am trying to get a quick information on whether any has ever
configured a sort of MPIO on a network level on AIX 5.3 without the use
of HACMP.

Let me explain on how this should work. A server would have 2-ethernet
cards, the first one is the primary with an IP address ( let's say
192.168.0.5). The second card would be on standby. When the switch (or
the NIC card itself) goes down, then AIX would automatically bring-up
the second card using the IP address of the primary card (192.168.0.5)
and when the switch on the primary ethernet card is fixed, I would
decide whether to switch back or not. Or do I have to write scripts to
implement this solution?
