if you have the base rte for alt_disk_install installed on your local
systems; you can actually execute it on the local host and create a
"cloned" image of your current system. Just remember the bootlist will
be altered and correct it before restarting your host.
So you do not have to have NIM running.

Subject: alt_disk_install migration to 5.3 without NIM?
I've got a number of AIX 5.2 servers that I'd like to bring up to AIX
5.3. I'd like to try the alt_disk_install method, so that if it
blows up (not an uncommon occurrence), we can go back to the old OS
without having to to a restore.
I've been reading the AIX 5.3 Installation guide, though, and it
appears to me that it is not possible to do this unless you're doing
the migration via a NIM server. We don't have that; I'll be doing it
from CD media.
Am I reading the docs wrong? If so, anyone have a quick walkthrough,
and/or some tips to help make this successful?
Thanks!
