You should make an inventory of you hardware (ethernet, harddrives, any
raid controllers, etc.)

and have a look at the hardware docs in either
ftp://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.9-RELEASE/
ftp://ftp4.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/5.2-RC2/
depending on which branch you are interested in.
