They are set up to boot directly from NTFS. An NTFS without a small
FAT/FAT16/FAT32 partition for initial load will prevent the boot
selector code from booting Windows XP.
FWIW, I use a small FAT32 partition in conjuction with BootMagic
(from the PartitionMagic folks) with my dual boot XP systems (I
have two of them).
