On old boxes, ACPI may not be usable and you should use APM instead. Most
pre-1999 hw has broken ASL in one form or another. I'm working on AML
blacklisting for old BIOSs where ACPI is known to be broken but the system
works fine with APM. This is a lower priority though.

As his reply points out, the problem is the same with/without ACPI. Your
claim about ACPI is unfounded. Much work remains to be done, but that
does not equate to broken.
