    The drive reads ATIP info from the disk to determine the maximum writable
    speed (Among other useful things)

    Of course the media could be lying about the maximum speed it's rated for, but
    I haven't seen media like that. I buy Verbatim 48x spindles of 50 disks which
    are fairly cheap but don't produce coasters.

    CD-RW media is slower but that's a function of the way CD-RW's are made and
    their smaller volume.
