Thank you Sam, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When I did a
kldload of if_bridge, bridgestp was also loaded. (Which of course, I
should have mentioned in my original post, please accept my apologies.)
I don't know enough about if_bridge to know what other information might
be important. The ifconfig bridge0 create part has always pretty much
Just Worked(TM) for me as long as I loaded if_bridge.

mentioned bridgestp in my original post.
